Last week was the 5 month anniversary of my arrival in Switzerland. A quick inventory of my emotions and attitude would indicate that things are finally going pretty well. I mostly like being here, I have a few friends that I sincerely love and enjoy, and I seem to have new eyes for this country [...]

The Banished Cheese
Posted in Uncategorized, tagged american in switzerland, swiss cheese, swiss food, switzerland, yverdon on March 26, 2010 | 2 Comments »
Just yesterday I stopped into the most delightful little food shop in Yverdon called La Ferme. It means “The Farm” and they specialize in local products: meat, cheese, eggs, vegetables, fruits, oils, pastas, etc. In other words, it’s a white-person heaven. In the check-out line I fell for a classic last-minute-purchase gimmick, the free sample. [...]
La Bicyclette

In French there are two words for ‘bicycle:’ La bicyclette and le vélo. Le vélo is the word I hear most often used, but it’s a bit of a shame because how delightful is la bicyclette? Also, note the yellow stone around the door way. Isn’t it beautiful? Many of the buildings in our part [...]
Commercial for Manor

Super cute new commercial for Manor (a Macys-like department store in Switzerland). How cute is the last scene! Bravo.
Today, I’m dreaming of summer.

I’m winter weary. I’m ready to wear a sundress and have coffee outdoors. I’m tired of turtlenecks, cold air blowing out of the car’s heater when I first get in, and snow. Snow, snow snow. I don’t want to use words like bleak, dreary, gray. I feel like a wet cat. Today I ran an [...]
Le secret bancaire vacille. Le secret de notre fromage tient bon.

I can’t help but giggle each time I see this advertisement in the Yverdon train station. Brilliant marketing. For you non-french speakers, it translates to: The secrecy in the banks may be wavering. The secrecy of our cheese holds (remains) true. On a political note: Dear IRS, Please stop picking on Switzerland.
The Halfpipe

If you had asked me a year ago to list the most unlikely places I would end up in my life, the World Cup Exposition Show for the Halfpipe would likely have been in my top 5. I suppose this is one of life’s great lessons in “never say never.” Perhaps it was a shameful [...]
Bienvenue chez nous!

Admittedly, I have something of a love-hate relationship with this apartment. The bathrooms are covered in grayish-brown tiles with little white flowers painted on every other one; the tub, sinks, toilet, etc are olive green and there’s no evidence that the kitchen has been renovated since the apartment was “updated” in 1979. That being said, [...]
My butcher is cheating on me.

It hurts to say, but it’s true. We’ve been developing a one-of-a-kind relationship with our local meat man for months now. And let me assure you, it was charming while it lasted. He called me Sarah; I called him Barry (BAH-ree). He sold his chicken 30% cheaper than the others; I provided him with the [...]
